General Schedule Pay System (GS)
- The government wide pay system for most white-collar employees.
- Pay set in terms of annual or per annum rates (yearly salary).
- Supplemented by locality salary tables.
- 10 within-grade steps.
Waiting Period for Within-grade Increases (WGI):
Steps 1 through 4 – 52 weeks
Steps 4 through 7 – 104 weeks
Steps 7 through 10 – 156 weeks
Federal Wage System (WG, WL and WS)
- Pay system for employees who work in trades, crafts, or as skilled or unskilled laborers.
- Pay set in terms of hourly or per hour rates (hourly wage).
- Wage schedules based on local prevailing rates.
- 5 within-grade steps.
Waiting Period for Within-grade Increases (WGI)
Steps 1 through 2 – 26 weeks
Steps 2 through 3 – 78 weeks
Steps 3 through 5 – 104 weeks
